  Mikasa combines pleasing texture with a solid white finish to create an enduring classic, Italian Countryside dinnerware. Glossy and handsome, Italian Countryside makes a fine gift, especially in this all-inclusive 45-piece set. <p> The eight place settings in the set include one of each of the following: an 11-1/8-inch dinner plate, 8-5/8-inch salad plate, rimmed 9-3/8-inch soup plate, 8-ounce teacup, and 6-1/2-inch saucer. Matching the place settings are four accessories: a 12-inch round platter, perfect for cakes, hors d'oeuvres, a roast chicken, and more; a round serving bowl for vegetables or potatoes; a sugar bowl with a handsome domed lid and oval filial; and a creamer with a gracefully pronounced spout. The sides of the sugar and creamer are fluted as well as ribbed. Like other reviewers, we have had dishes (2 sets purchased in the '80s, one set in the late '90s) that were marked "microwave safe" but still burned fingers when remvoved from the oven. This is apparently not an uncommon problem. Apparently, just because something won't totally melt down in a microwave is not necessarily a good enough reason to put it in the microwave. In doing internet research, I found a list of dishes from a variety of manufacturers that were supposed to be microwave safe...really. The Mikasa Italian Countryside pattern (which I had been looking at for several years) was one of the patterns listed. I purchased one 5-piece setting to try it out in the microwave and was pleased. Now, if you put your hand exactly under where the food was cooked, it does get a bit hot, but that's what any serving piece would do if you put hot food in it--transfer of heat. But, if you pull the plate out of the microwave by the rim, which is what you should do anyway or the mug out by the handle, you should be OK--no oven mitt required. On our previous dishes the rims always got hot, even though there was no food on them. I can't tell you how many plates my husband has dropped over the years. You should note that the dishes may not be as white as they look on your screen. It's really more of a winter white, which is a light creamy white. The price can't be beat for quality stoneware. While I got mine at a low "gold box" price, even at $200, it's only $25 per place setting and that's not including the five-piece serving set. When you add in the free shipping (which arrived very quickly), and not having to go to the store and lug the dishes home it's an even more impressive deal.
